Alpine House Mural | Field notes for keas

Dunedin Botanic Gardens

Winter 2026

12m x 2m

This mural was commissioned by the Dunedin Botanic Gardens and supported by the Amenities Society, the Friends of the Botanic Gardens as well as Keep Dunedin beautiful.

The wall itself is in the “Alpine House”, where the public bathrooms of the gardens are situated.

Ten Alpine plants are depicted here, all endemic to the Alpine region of Otago, with two kea’s flying by in silhouette form. The influences for the mural are a mixture of field guide illustrations, stylised postage stamps from the seventies and the mists that so often blanket the Southern Alps.
