Fabulous, fantastical murals will bloom across South Dunedin in the next two months, as the city hosts the inaugural Ebb & Flow Street Art Festival.
Local artists Guy Howard-Smith, Aroha Novak, Bruce Mahalski, Lara Hattingh, Claire Rye, Shane Walker, Koryu Aoshima will be joined by Gisborne artist Kelly Sunshine in creating murals on eight South Dunedin walls.

South Dunedin will be buzzing with art for the next two months as the area’s first mural festival, called Ebb and Flow, officially gets under way.
The project had secured eight walls in Prince Albert Rd and Carey Ave to be painted by local and national artists, including Koryu Aoshima, Shane Walker, Lara Hattingh, Aroha Novak, Bruce Mahalski, Kelly Sunshine, Guy Howard-Smith and Claire Rye.
This article speaks on the creation of the “Protea Bridge” mural in Heidelberg, South Africa. This mural was created in collaboration with Heidelberg Hope, a non-profit seeking to beautify and uplift the town. Heidelberg is my hometown and the very place where my late mother established her own artistic practice. It gives a brief overview of our family history in the town and my career.
This article concentrates chiefly on the “Protea Bridge” mural and how it came about. During my visit to Heidelberg, I found out that my mom had planned to create a mural on that bridge, specifically of proteas, but that this idea had remained a pipe dream. In collaboration with Heidelberg Hope, we were able to make it a reality.

Askies! was founded in 2021 and consists of three members - Lara Hattingh, Bahle Ncube & Temiah Booysen.
Askies! Derives its name from the colloquial pronunciation of the Afrikaans word “Ekskuus," meaning “Excuse me”. The heart of the collective is to create grassroots exhibition & learning opportunities for ourselves and other local creatives. We strive to make art, create space and foster community in the competitive art market of Gauteng, South Africa.
